MTV's best new artist, Tokio Hotel selects South African director
Issued by: Wicked Pixels (Pty) Ltd

European Pop Rock sensation, Tokio Hotel, winner of Best New Artist at the American MTV Video Music Awards, selected South African director, Craig Wessels of Wicked Pixels to create the music video for their latest hit, ‘Automatic', a track off their soon to be released album, Humanoid.

The music video premiered on MTV on Friday 4th September amongst much hype and anticipation from their millions of fans.

MTV reports on the new video: “Where do you go when you're one of the biggest rock acts on the planet, you've already jumped out of a helicopter, you roll deep in a Monster Truck, and your lead singer has a wax statue of himself? If you're Tokio Hotel, and you're too big for this world, then you reach for other worlds, and you go beyond the human race like (the band) do in their brand-new video, "Automatic," directed by Craig Wessels.

Tokio Hotel's new "Automatic" video, off of their upcoming [/i]Humanoid album, is a big-league beast of a video. It's a legendary tale of astronomic proportions, with aesthetic references to The Matrix, Fritz Lang, Mad Max, Transformers, and Iron Giant. "Automatic" is the most moving robot story since Wall-E.

And this video was not cheap. (The band) flew to the remote deserts of South Africa - where they had no cell phone service, to shoot it. Tom broke a limited-edition guitar along the way. Was it worth it? Obviously. The bar has been raised.”

Just four days after release, the video was ranked as Youtube's “Top Viewed” video in over 10 countries, with over a million views. Being a large production for a famous band, Wicked believes this exposure is great for the South African industry as a whole.

It was due to their international award winning work on TV commercials that Wicked Pixels was approached. Wicked Pixels has two directors in Finweek's 2009 Adreview ‘Top 10 Directors', based on the international awards circuit rankings, with Craig Wessels at no. 6. Craig's treatment and storyline was selected, and although the band management would have preferred to shoot in the USA, Wicked Pixels pushed for an all-South African production, including editing and post-production.

Shooting took place at three remote locations in SA. In an interview in TeenVogue, Tokio Hotel's lead singer, Bill Kaulitz says of the video: "Shooting the 'Automatic' video three days in the desert was quite an adventure! It was in the middle of nowhere in Africa - no cell phone reception, no Internet, not even paved roads. But in return we got a location that was just unreal. I've never had such a good feeling after leaving a set. I knew it was right from the beginning. When I first read the video script (treatment) I knew this was exactly how I wanted to visualise our song 'Automatic'."

The video has an epic scale, including sweeping helicopter shots of classic muscle cars driving through beautiful desert landscapes. Wicked Pixels were also responsible for the animated robot scenes and originated the idea of incorporating Tokio Hotel's logo into the design of the robot's faces. It was this type of attention to detail that the band was looking for. The team of animation and VFX artists at Wicked Pixels came to the fore and, under extreme time constraints, delivered the beautiful, emotionally charged robotic sequences that are wowing audiences across Europe and the USA.

Bill Kaulitz is a Dior Dude  (Presse internationale) posté le lundi 07 septembre 2009 10:15

Bill Kaulitz is a Dior Dude

Bill Kaulitz, the lead singer of German mega-band Tokio Hotel, is led out of the Dior boutique by a bodyguard on Friday (September 5) in Paris, France.
The band was recently asked if it was true that that Jay-Z
invited them to dinner. They responded, “He was at one of our concerts.
But we didn’t know beforehand. It was more of a spontaneous thing–we
didn’t know that he would be there. We just found out about it right
before [the concert]. Afterwards, we all went to eat something
together. I don’t think that Jay-Z paid, to be honest. I think the record label did.”
Jay-Z is a Tokio Hotel fan!

Cinema Bizarre vs. Tokio Hotel  (Presse internationale) posté le vendredi 12 juin 2009 12:44

Cinema Bizarre vs. Tokio Hotel

Based on looks alone, Cinema Bizarre and Tokio Hotel don't seem to have too many similarities besides the fact that they're two of Germany's most popular bands and both seem to share a love of Japan. Yet on websites such as YouTube, it's easy to find comments about Tokio Hotel posted on Cinema Bizarre videos, and vice versa.

Cinema Bizarre came to fame in 2007 with their song "Lovesongs (They Kill Me)". If you think they look familiar, it might be because you've been exposed to "Visual Kei", a popular and androgynous rock style started in Japan. In 2008, they embarked on their first tour in Europe. Although they haven't reached as much international success as Tokio Hotel, they toured with Lady Gaga this past year, giving America another taste of Germany's finest.

Obviously, the rise of Tokio Hotel has been fast and strong, but Cinema Bizarre is not far behind. So why are some fans of one so not into the other?

"Cinema Bizzare is definitely unique, but they are entirely too far-fetched for me," said Brittany, a huge American fan of Tokio Hotel. "If they tried out for the Beatle Juice sequel, they would all get leading roles. Tokio Hotel on the other hand is definitely unique, but all in good taste. They all have their own distinctive styles, and I feel like they appeal to a much more diverse audience. Their looks are also authentic, and they are set apart from everyone else by nature, not because it was their intentions and that makes you appreciate them even more."

Ashley, a fan of Cinema Bizarre, said, "Tokio Hotel is nothing like Cinema Bizarre. You can't compare their music, their styles, nothing. Maybe you can put Bill in a picture with [Cinema Bizarre] and he'd look like he belongs, but you can't seriously say that about the rest of [Tokio Hotel]. Cinema Bizarre look more like characters, and everything about them reminds me of The Gazette or Alice Nine. Tokio Hotel isn't bad, there's just no comparison!"

Some may or may not agree, but Monica, a fan of both bands, also had an interesting point. "I think both bands are awesome. They both have great music, they both have extraordinary styles. I think they're kinda alike only from their style, but as you hear their music you can tell the difference. I also think that they are true to their fans about their music."

Whether or not fans can agree, Tokio Hotel and Cinema Bizarre seem to have made a lasting impression. As for my opinion ... excuse me while I escape to the stars, to infinity and beyond...

Cinema Bizarre vs Tokio Hotel
